Iams Food Recall: Proctor & Gamble Voluntarily Recalls Dry Pet Food Possibly Contaminated With Salmonella Bacteria (PHOTOS)

As certain varieties may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, parent company of Iams and Eukanuba, Proctor & Gamble, voluntarily made the decision recently to recall several lots of dry pet food that were distributed across the country, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

The pet food that may be affected have "Best by" sell dates between Nov. 6, 2014 and Nov. 14, 2014, and any pet owners who have purchased these products are advised to throw them out and contact the company lest their pets get infected, and salmonella poisoning can be deadly.

"The affected product was distributed to select retailers across the United States," reads a statement on the Food and Drug Administration's recalls website. "These products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site. P&G's routine testing determined that some products made during this time-frame have the potential for Salmonella contamination...No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement."

Pets infected with salmonellosis may become fatigued, have a fever, or have bloody vomit and/or diarrhea. Others may show less visible symptoms such as decreased appetite, while others still may appear completely healthy while accidentally spreading the infection to other animals and people, according to CBS News. If left untreated, infected dogs may experience abortions or miscarriages while pregnant, or exhibit "arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms."

The recall is specific to products with lot codes and expiration dates that can be found here on the FDA's website.

If you have purchased any of the recalled products, you can contact Proctor & Gamble toll-free at 800-208-0172 from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET, or through the specific brand's websites.
