A Brampton teen was shot dead over the weekend after he tracked down his lost cellphone in London, Ont., said police, who are now warning people about the dangers of using phone-tracking applications.
18-year-old Jeremy Cook lost his cellphone in a taxi and traced the device to an address in London's north end early Sunday morning, according to police officials. Police said that Cook, using the phone-tracking app, approached a car with three individuals inside. When the teenager confronted the men and tried to retrieve his phone, the vehicle started pulling away, prompting him to grab hold of the driver's side door. A shooting ensued and Cook died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to The Huffington Post.
Cook was found behind a nearby plaza and was declared dead at the scene. Police found the abandoned car, which hit a fence before ramming into a telephone pole. They also recovered the victim's cellphone and have obtained CCTV footage from the area. Authorities have initiated a manhunt for the three suspects.
"It's certainly extreme," London Police Const. Ken Steeves said. "No one ever would have predicted or even thought that a loss of life would have resulted from a loss of a phone," CBC News reported.
Cook was an ambitious individual who graduated from high school in Brampton last year and set up his own business constructing and selling cottage chairs, according to the London Free Press. The teenager was also featured in a local business magazine as a young entrepreneur and had moved to London in order to start a career in carpentry.
