Philadelphia Eagles RUMORS: No Progress On QB Sam Bradford's Contract Extension?

From the sounds of things, neither the Philadelphia Eagles nor new de facto No. 1 signal-caller Sam Bradford have made all that much of a push to get an extension done of late - despite talk that the two sides were attempting to hammer out a deal, a recent report suggests that little headway has actually been made.

"Also, per sources, the Eagles have had preliminary contract talks with QB Sam Bradford. Sides talked a few times, but no real progress made," NFL.com's Albert Breer tweeted.

It's really not surprising that the Eagles and Bradford haven't been able to come together on a deal.

Bradford, the former first-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, has now torn the ACL in his left knee twice. He hasn't taken a live, regular season snap in over 18 months and prior to that, he wasn't exactly setting the world on fire.

After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year with the St. Louis Rams, Bradford struggled with both injuries and inconsistency and simply hasn't been able to maximize his still prodigious potential - he's thrown 59 touchdowns and 38 interceptions and amassed a career 79.3 passer rating during parts of four NFL seasons.

While the Eagles likely are interested in lowering his cap number for 2015, currently $12.9 million, they've already signed all their draft picks and likely made all the moves they're going to make, so there's not much of a need to make room for salary this year - not to mention the jettisoning of Evan Mathis last week opened up even more space.

Bradford is still just 27 and could very well become the franchise signal-caller the entire NFL thought he could be when he entered the league out of Oklahoma in 2010. Eagles head coach Chip Kelly clearly believes he can still become that player, otherwise he wouldn't have shipped former starter Nick Foles and a 2016 second-round pick to the Rams in exchange for Bradford this offseason. Ironically, HNGN passed along a report from earlier this week that the Rams had make locking Foles up with a new extension a priority and were looking to get it done prior to the 2015 regular season.

Still, for the Eagles, the likeliest outcome seems to be Bradford playing out the string of his deal and either proving he can stay healthy and perform at a high level in 2015 or again showing exactly what he's shown to this point - that he's incapable of turning his natural talent into tangible on-field production - and ending up in yet another new NFL home in 2016.

Neither side seems to have much incentive to get something done now - Bradford is making quite a bit of money already and the Eagles still have an out should he falls short of expectations again.
