PlayStation 3 owners will not be happy to hear that Sony has no plans of introducing backward compatibility on its PlayStation 4 consoles.
The decision follows just days after Microsoft's announcement at this year's E3 conference in Los Angeles, which was met with a roar of approval from the audience, The International Business Times reported. The company revealed that more than 100 Xbox 360 titles will be playable on the Xbox One console and that the backwards compatibility will also allow owners of the next-gen console to play Xbox 360 games online with gamers still using the older console, according to IGN.
However, Sony will not be following suit and will instead focus on software updates for the PS4 console, Polygon reported.
"The announcement didn't change," Sony Computer Entertainment head Shuhei Yoshida said. "I don't think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn't have backward compatibility."
Yoshida said that Sony is currently investing in creating new experiences on the PS4, and the company has not shifted its focus to bringing older PS3 game titles onto the current platform. However, the Sony executive did not rule out the possibility of backward compatibility.
"Backward compatibility is hard," he said. "I won't say we'll never do it, but it's not an easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that."
The introduction of backwards compatibility to PS4 consoles would, however, have affect Sony's PlayStation Now service, which allows gamers to stream a number of classic PlayStation games to multiple devices, PlayStation Universe reported.
