Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has maintained his I’m-not-going-to-pick-a-quarterback-just-yet plan the entire training camp. However, after Michael Vick’s performance the first two preseason games—he may not have a choice.
Although Nick Foles has been fairly good the first two contest, Vick has been slightly better, according to USA TODAY Sports.
The 12-year veteran completed nine out of his 10 passes for 105 yards against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night. He was 9-for-9 before his Hail Mary pass was intercepted right before the second quarter came to an end.
Foles, who started the game, was 6-of-8, throwing for 53 yards. He also threw an interception. He was attempting to throw the ball away but the pass was picked off.
“I tried to throw it in the back of the end zone, and it didn't get there," he said.
In the first two games, Vick is 13-for-15 for 199 yards. In the same period Foles is 11-for-14 for 96 yards.
Although Vicks stats are better, Kelly is still saying no one has a leg up.
"We're not going to make any rash decisions," Kelly said. "You can put your pens down now if you think we're naming a starting quarterback in this room right now."
Vick’s perceived advantage through two games does not mean anything will change on his end.
“I have to continue to work hard," Vick said. "I think that's what put me in position to succeed and excel on the football field … Just the way we prepare has me in position where I feel like I can do it all. I don't want to get too overconfident. I want to remain humble and continue to have the same work ethic."
The Eagle’s third preseason game—the game in which the starters play a majority of the contest—will be against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.
