Roadside Bomb Kills 14 Family Members In Southern Afghanistan

A roadside bomb killed 14 Afghan family members in the southern area of Afghanistan on Saturday after they attempted to flee from the area to their home in Marja.

The incident is the first known major attack during the month of Ramadan, which began on Thursday. A group has yet to claim responsibility for the major attack in the district of Marja in the province of Helmand.

"Fourteen civilians were killed and five others wounded in an IED (improvised explosive device) blast in Marja district of Helmand province. All of them were from the same family," Mohammad Jan Rasolyar, the deputy governor of Helmand, told Agence France-Presse.

Rasolyar added that the IED was struck by a vehicle right before Iftar, where the Muslims break their fasting by having evening meals after the sun sets.

Nabi Jan Mullah Khel, the police chief of Helmand, said that 16 family members were killed, while a tribal elder from the region claimed he counted 15 bodies as he helped them get out of the wreckage, Samaa TV reported.
