An intensive, 24-hour manhunt by New Orleans police has resulted in the apprehension of the suspect in the fatal shooting of police officer Daryle Halloway, who was shot and killed while transporting 33-year-old Travis Boys to jail.
Boys was being transported to the Orleans Parish Prison when he somehow managed to draw a gun and attack Halloway, despite his hands being handcuffed behind his back. He then escaped from the police officer's cruiser after it had crashed onto a utility pole, according to Reuters.
The dramatic arrest of the suspect came as he crashed a pickup truck he stole as he was driving through a New Orleans neighborhood. He then fled on foot, where officers later spotted him at a convenience store. He was still wearing broken handcuffs when the police stopped him trying to board a city bus, reports The Washington Post.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison described how the arrest unfolded.
"To my understanding, he got on the bus after spotting the officers. And the officers saw that and then he got off the bus and then was apprehended," he said.
Boys was then taken to a local hospital for dehydration.
Police reports state that two guns were recovered from the fallen officer's cruiser in addition to Halloway's service weapon, which remained holstered during the deadly incident. One of the guns, a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson, is believed to be the weapon used to kill the police officer, according to Reuters.
Boys will be charged with first-degree murder of a police officer, aggravated escape and illegal possession of a firearm.
