Alaska Dog Found at Coast Guard Base; Did He Make The Long Swim?

A chocolate Labrador named Bently owned by Ed and Renee Schofield surprisingly crossed the water from their home on Pennock Island to the mainland.

The couple, who live on the southern end of island, received a call from the pound in Ketchikan saying their dog is in the animal shelter, which is a long swim from their home.

"No way would he swim over to the Coast Guard base," Ed Schofield said. "That's a long swim, and he doesn't even know what's over there."

Bently was found at the U.S. Coast Guard base and was identified by his tattoo, The Ketchikan Daily News reported.

According to the owners, the lab doesn't like to swim and couldn't possibly make it that far.

"He's not a swimmer," said Renee Schofield said. "... For him to go all the way over there is just weird."

Ed Schofield believes that since the lab doesn't like to swim, someone must have pulled up to their dock on Pennock and the dog either jumped in or was taken, Alaska Dispatched News reported.

The puppy is from the Pat Wise Animal Shelter and was adopted by the couple about three years ago. After the incident, the Schofields hope that their pet Bently will stay home with them.
