U.S. Embassy: Truck Carrying Border Crossing Cards Was Hijacked

A truck carrying crossing cards that allow temporary travel for Mexican residents to and from the U.S. was hijacked earlier this month, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico announced.

The embassy said in a statement, according to The Associated Press, that the theft occurred on June 7. However, the embassy declined to go into specifics, only stating that the theft occurred somewhere "in northern Mexico."

The truck was making a trip from the United States to U.S. Consulates in the Mexican cities of Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Border crossing cards are essentially Visas, but they can only be used to travel from Mexico by land, pleasure vessel or ferry. The document, together with a valid passport, would meet the documentary requirements for entry at all land, air and sea ports of entry (to include travel from Canada).

The cards were re-issued for the intended holders and they have been made aware of the robbery in case the hijackers use the stolen cards to attempt identity theft.

Furthermore, an electronic alert was issued so that stolen cards can't be used at the border.
