"Transparent" gave Amazon its first hit show since it launched original programming in 2013. The online retailer is returning the favor by giving the show a third season renewal even before the second season premieres.
"Transparent" stars Jeffrey Tambor as Maura Pfefferman (born Mort), a father of three adult children who comes out as a transgender woman. Series creator Jill Soloway loosely based the show on her own father coming out as a transgender woman a few years before the show premiered.
"I am so thrilled that I get to share more of the Pfeffermans' story with the world," Soloway said in a statement. "We are all so in love with watching them change and grow. I am blown away by the creative freedom Amazon gives me and I can't wait to reveal where this journey is going to take us."
The third season will likely premiere in 2016 and contain 10 episodes like the first two seasons.
Amazon Studios also announced on Thursday that Soloway had signed an overall deal to develop more television projects for Amazon Prime.
"Jill is truly a creative force and I'm thrilled that we will be collaborating with her additional projects in the future and on a third season of 'Transparent,'" Roy Price, vice president of Amazon Studios, said in the statement. "The second season is currently starting production, and I know our customers will be delighted to continue the journey with Maura and the Phefferman family."
Following its first season last fall, "Transparent" won the 2015 Golden Globe award for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical and Tambor took home the award for Best Actor.
The second season will premiere as the transgender movement takes in the wake of Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox's growing popularity on the Netflix series, "Orange Is the New Black."
"The world has changed," Tambor told "Today" on Thursday. "And that's a good thing."
