Despite the drama of Rodriguez's potential suspension, the 38-year-old slugger has given his team a boost since returning to the lineup. The team is 6-2 since his return, thanks to his .375 batting with two homeruns and six RBIs, the Associated Press reports.
Rodriguez made headlines again on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox when pitcher Ryan Dempster nailed Rodriguez with a fast ball during the slugger's first at-bat. Rodriguez kept his cool and walked to first, but retaliated later in the sixth inning with a solo homer. It helped to spark the Yankees comeback, who won 9-6 after Brett Gardner's triple.
"Whether you like me or hate me, what's wrong is wrong. That was unprofessional and silly," Rodriguez said of getting hit to the Associated Press. "Today kind of brought us together."
"I'm not sure how I would feel if I was on a different team, but Alex is my teammate and obviously I'm glad to have him back in the room," Gardner told MLB.com, via the Associated Press. "We know that we're at a point in the season where we've got to play every game like it's our last."
The Yankees (64-59) are slated to start pitcher Ivan Nova (6-4, 2.99 ERA). The right-hander has played well of late, boasting a 4-2 record with a 1.89 ERA in his last seven starts. He gave up three runs in 7 1/3 innings on Wednesday in an 11-3 rout by the Yankees over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Toronto, meanwhile, is trying to snap its streak of nine-straight losses at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays (57-67) will start Esmil Rogers (3-7, 4.91) for the first game.
Game 2 of the doubleheader starts at 7:05 p.m. ET.
