Oscar Pistorius and Steenkamp Family 'Talking' About Potential Civil Settlement, Lawyers Discuss Decision Outside of Court

The families of Oscar Pistorius and his late girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp are currently in communication over a potential settlement they're thinking of making outside the courtroom.

According to Steenkamp's lawyer Dup de Bruyn, who spoke with the Associated Press on Tuesday, "the two sides are talking," but he did not go into further detail on the matter.

South Africa's Times newspaper stated that Pistorius' lawyers first approached the Steenkamp family's representatives, in hopes of talking over a settlement before Pistorius' March 3 trial date.

Times also reported that Steenkamp's mother and father were looking for compensation totaling around $300,000 for loss of income and emotional stress, according to AP.

Pistorius was indicted on Monday for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp. In the South African capital of Pretoria's Magistrate Court, the prosecution claimed that Pistorius shot Steenkamp while she is was in the bathroom, firing his weapon through the door of a toilet stall, striking the model three times.

Steenkamp died from gunshot wounds shortly after 3 a.m. The defense maintained that Pistorius thought an intruder was in his home, hiding in the bathroom, and that Steenkamp was still in bed. He didn't know she was actually in the bathroom, his lawyers said.

If convicted, the world famous, double amputee Olympic track star faces life in prison for premeditated murder.

But if the two families settle outside of court, the Times reported, the potential payout given to the Steenkamps could be lowered.

The prosecution said that "intense" discussions were still going on as of Tuesday.
