Star Trek legend and LGBT activist George Takei once called out Donald Trump for his views on same-sex marriage, the Hollywood Reporter reports. The actor spoke to MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell and told him about the details of a conversation he had with Trump about his preference for 'traditional' marriage.
After a press conference for Trump's TV show "Celebrity Apprentice" two years ago, Takei challenged Trump to lunch so they could discuss the issue of marriage equality.
"We had that lunch and again when I met him, he said, 'You know what, George? I just came from a gay marriage' – he had come from a wedding of a very important Broadway personality. He told me, 'They're good friends of mine. It was a beautiful marriage. They're wonderful friends.' "
Takei asked Trump why he couldn't support same-sex marriage if he attends gay wedding ceremonies, and Trump responded that he's for 'traditional' marriage.
"We finally agreed to disagree," Takei said, "he was for traditional marriage, despite the fact that he'd been married three times. That is not traditional."
The star said he approves of Trump's three-time marriage but also makes the point that democracy in the United States is constantly adjusting and expanding to ensure equality to more people.
"Over the years, we have come to understand what marriage really means and that's love. It's centered on love," he said, and mentioned his 28-year-long relationship with spouse Brad (the couple wed in 2008). "That is what really counts."
