The Golden State Warriors and restricted free agent Draymond Green have ceased contract talks, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Warriors got the first crack at Green as soon as free agency opened early Wednesday morning. A verbal agreement was expected to come out of that meeting with Green abandoning his talks with other teams shortly after. However, given the apparent divide between the Warriors and Green, the young big man is open to meeting with other organizations immediately, Yahoo Sports reports.
As a restricted free agent, the Warriors can still match any offer sheet Green signs.
Green, 25, set career-highs in points (11.2), rebounds (8.2), assists (3.7) and minutes (31.5) this past season. He also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Green was a second-round pick for Golden State back in 2012 and has made a total of $2.6 million in his three NBA seasons. He is expected to receive max-level offers on the open market.
This is especially true after DeMarre Carroll agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract with the Toronto Raptors and Paul Millsap was offered a max four-year, $80 million deal by the Orlando Magic.
Golden State, which already has $83 million in committed salary for next season, can shave off a bit of their luxury tax penalty by trading David Lee and his $15.4 million salary.
The Detroit Pistons (Green grew up in Michigan), Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks were all rumored to have significant interest in Green. A source told Yahoo Sports that at least five teams were circling the free agent now that talks had fallen through with Golden State.
