Garmin Debuts New Bike Lights To Make Cycling Safer

Swiss tech firm Garmin plans on making bike riding much safer with two new lighting options from its line of Varia smart cycling gadgets.

The Varia head light is able to make the path in front of the rider more visible while also helping them keep their eyes on the road, according to Gizmodo.

By connecting to Garmin's Edge GPS system, the device can adjust the throw of light based on how fast you're going. It will cast a wider glow when you ride slower to show more of what's around you and then shine farther ahead when you ride faster to make everything in front of you more visible.

The company is also treating cyclists with a matching smart tail light that uses this data to get brighter when the rider is slowing down to alert approaching traffic, Engadget reported.

Both gadgets can use the GPS unit's ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the light.

The Varia head light and tail light will be available this fall for $200 and $70, respectively, on their own, but cyclists will be able to get the two lights together in a bundle for $300.
