Boston (74-54) is battling with the Tampa Bay Rays for sole possession of the AL East's top spot. The Red Sox can reclaim the No. 1 spot in the AL East with a win on Thursday, the Associated Press reports. The Boston club has won only four of its last 12 games, with its latest loss coming on Tuesday when pitcher Brayan Villarreal walked Marco Scutaro with bases loaded, giving the Giants a 3-2 win.
"We shouldn't be in that situation," Boston catcher David Ross told Associated Press reporters. "We had a guy that we know who is notorious for taking pitches, we have to throw strike one."
Felix Doubront (8-6, 3.95 ERA) is slated on Wednesday to take the mound for Boston. His last start, against the New York Yankees on Friday, resulted in a season-worst seven runs and eight hits allowed in just four innings. Boston lost, 10-3.
"I feel like I was a little bit off with my mechanics, the release point of the ball," Doubront told the team website, according to the Associated Press. "My past outing was the same. I have to keep working on that."
San Francisco (56-69) will start pitcher Barry Zito (4-8, 5.34), who is looking to bounce back after going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA over his previous four starts. The Giants moved him to the bullpen after his 7-3 loss at Philadelphia on July 30, but Chad Gaudin's placement on the disabled list brought Zito back into the starting rotation.
Boston handedly won the first game, 7-0; San Francisco responded in the second game with a narrow win, 3-2. Wednesday will determine the winner of the series.
