Socialite Melissa Berkelhammer was evicted by a city marshal from an apartment on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan where she had been squatting for over a year. Actress Julian Michelle allowed her friend, 38, and her mother to move in with her temporarily while their alleged home was being renovated, according to People.
Michelle and her mother, Jocelyn Engle, told Berkelhammer she could stay for three weeks which ended up turning into one year. Engle says they tried to help Berkelhammer and her mother find an apartment of their own.
"I found them a lovely apartment on the West Side," she says. "All of a sudden they said they'd only live on the Upper East Side."
When the socialite refused to move out, Michelle and her mother had no choice but to call the police. An insider close to Berkelhammer tells Page Six "It took hours to get them out. Julianne hired movers and a large storage space on East 62nd Street so that their belongings would not be thrown out or lost."
Berkelhammer is a graduate of Princeton University and attended Harvard Law School. After she graduated, she went on to write for Avenue magazine and the Huffington Post where she covered everything from fashion to film, according to People. Berkelhammer was busted for allegedly shoplifting $4,000 worth of goods from Bergdorf Goodman in May, according to the New York Daily News.
