The main suspect in the double homicide of an 18-year-old and her son is an illegal immigrant who was deported in 2014. The bodies of Maria Cruiz-Calvillo and her 3-year-old son, Luis Lopez-Cruz, were found in a "remote area" last Thursday in Washington, according to The Daily Caller. Prudencio Fragos-Ramirez, 25, who prosecutors believed was dating Cruiz-Calvillo, was charged on Monday and is currently being held on $1 million bail.
Cruiz-Calvillo and her son both had gunshot wounds and were discovered in a burned car. Franklin County coroner Dan Blasdel told reporters on Monday that the boy was "likely still alive when the car was set ablaze," reported The Daily Caller.
Fragos-Ramirez's neighbor told police that Cruiz-Calvillo and her son were seen at the suspect's house on Thursday. They allegedly left in Cruiz-Calvillo's car, which was found burning 30 minutes after the neighbor watched them leave.
It did not take long for police to charge Fragos-Ramirez, who has past DUI charges.
He was arrested shortly after the investigation began for giving police "conflicting accounts," but continuously denied any involvement in the double-homicide, according to The Daily Caller:
"He (Fragos-Ramirez) said he recently owned a handgun but sold it to Cruiz-Calvillo. He told investigators that his brother witnessed the gun sell, but the brother denied the claim."
Fragos-Ramirez was deported from the United States in 2014 but re-entered the country illegally afterwards, according to The Tri-City Herald.
Immigration and deportation has been a hot topic in the United States of late because of controversial comments real estate mogul Donald Trump made about Latinos while announcing his 2016 presidential bid for the Republican party. Last week, an illegal immigrant with a history of charges killed a woman in San Francisco.
