Solar Flares 2013 Threats Real, Experts Warn

The solar flare warnings for 2013 are real, and even have experts touting them as "the perfect solar storm."

In a report by Fox News, experts warn that the solar flares that have been predicted to occur in 2013 are real. According to the report, a solar storm is predicted to be worse than the one in 1958 which wiped out radio communication all over the U.S. This storm is predicted to create devastation worth as much as $2 trillion.

iPhones, Blackberrys along with the GPS satellites that help airplanes navigate will all be knocked out. Power grids will also be affected temporarily that could leave whole towns and cities powerless for a while.

"The concern of a strong solar flare in the direction of Earth is legit," professor Jose Lopez, a physicist at Seton Hall University told FoxNews.com. "The possibility that such a Sun burst could hit Earth could cause extensive damage as it would charge-up our electrical equipment and destroy them."

The storm begins with a multi-degree blast of fire from the sun which cools in space but leaves behind a huge amount of "highly-charged" energy that affected the satellites. Electronic devices are also affected with this highly charged particles going through them, disrupting transmission.

"The ramped up solar activity is to be expected through 2013, as it's the peak of the Sun's current 11-year cycle," Lopez explained.

Lopez also asks people not to panic. This isn't a sign that the sun is exploding and definitely not a sign that the world is coming to an end. The storm could just pass by like it never happened.

"Solar weather forecasting is trickier than earth weather forecasting. Further, the entire solar weather process is not fully understood," Lopez told FoxNews.com. "And predicting the future is unfortunately something that science can't do. Science can give us some potential scenarios of things that might happen, but who knows?"
