Samsung is rumored to be working on a smartwatch that it will debut on September 4 at its "Unpacked" event in Berlin and New York City. In that time, Giga Om has posted some new details about the upcoming wearable wrist accessory that will be joining the Galaxy lineup of smart devices from the South Korean Tech Giant.
As of now, according to sources from GigaOm, the Galaxy gear will be a square, high-quality device offered in with a color OLED display 2.5-inches diagonally and 3-inches diagonally once the case is included. It will offer an accelerometer similar to the Nike fuel band. This will allow users to track their fitness regiment via their smartwatch. The device is rumored to come with a camera integrated into the wrist strap but no official word on the quality of that camera has been announced yet but other sources put it at 2 megapixels. The clasp of the device is expected to have speakers, allowing either music or notification chimes to come through the device. It will come with a built-in NFC and access to Bluetooth 4.0 LE.
In addition to the information from GigaOm, SamMobile has an anonymous tipster leaking information about the Galaxy Gear specs as well. Among these are the inclusion of Samsung's Exynos 4212 dual core 1.5GHz CPU, ARM Mali-400 MP4 GPU and 1GB of RAM.
It's important to note that none of these specs are official, just the top rumored specs at the moment. Nothing will be known for sure until Samsung officially unveils the project on Sept. 4. In the meantime, the real question is whether Samsung's smartwatch will be able to beat out Apple's rumored iWatch, since Samsung will likely be playing its hand first, it needs to set the bar high in order to upset Apple.
