Honda Motor Company has recalled an additional 4.5 million vehicles in Japan that might have been fitted with faulty airbags sourced from Takata Corp. This latest recall includes the 1.63 million Honda Fit small cars and CR-V crossover models in Japan, Honda spokesman Teruhiko Tatebe has confirmed, according to Bloomberg.
The company has so far recalled about 24.5 million vehicles to replace the Takata air bags. Honda tackles the same safety devices problem with other Japanese carmakers, Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co.
The Japanese automakers have vowed to extend its review and recalls world-wide to prevent further accidents among motorists.
The defective airbags had been linked to eight deaths around the world. The defect in the airbags has been associated with a chemical propellant that explodes when inflated, sending metal shrapnel toward drivers and passengers, ChannelNewsAsia reported.
Although Honda has a minor stake in Takata at 1.2 percent, the former has vowed not to support it in any way. The latest wave of recalls was undertaken by the new company president, Takahiro Hachigo.
