Earlier this month, CBS announced it will be developing a medical drama entitled "Dorothy" based on the world of "The Wizard of Oz." Now, NBC is looking to set a show in the iconic yellow-brick road paved universe as well.
CBS' drama, an unusual concept to say the least, was described by the network as "a medical soap based in New York City, inspired by the characters and themes immortalized in The Wizard of Oz."
Now it seems L. Frank Baum's beloved tale is going to be bent into another television venture and interpretation. Deadline reports that NBC has purchased an Oz-themed drama series entitled "Emerald City from Siberia." The show's creator and showrunner will be Matthew Arnold. Meanwhile, IGN reports "Heroes" creator Tim Kring is shopping around another Oz inspired TV show along with fellow "Heroes" alums Adam Armus and Kay Foster. In addition, the Syfy channel has "Warriors of Oz," a miniseries from director Tim Bekmambetov, in development. All of these projects are coming off of Disney's full-length film "Oz the Great and Powerful" from earlier this year.
Now is a good time for fans of the classic fantasy movie, that starred Judy Garland finding her way to the Wizard of Oz so that she could be sent home after being carried to the magical land by a tornado. Her path is blocked by the Wicked Witch of the West and she must overcome the villain with the help of her three friends, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion. Fans are overdue for a revival of the 1939 film now that its 75th anniversary is coming up. However, fans are likely scratching their heads at what makes this beloved tale so ripe for drama, especially a medical drama.
