Ever wanted to try Duff Beer, the favorite alcoholic beverage of Homer Simpson? Now you can, as long as you're willing to travel to Chile where "The Simpsons" will put its first real-life version of the drink on sale, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Fox has consulted with the British brewmaster Paul Farnsworth to create a signature flavor for the lager. The package will make no direct reference to "The Simpsons" other than the beer's name in the same font as it's pictured on the show. The TV studio then plans to expand the beer's sales across Europe and further into South America.
"It's a premium lager," Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox consumer products, told The Wall Street Journal. "It's got a very good balance of flavor and refreshment to it. It's fairly deep golden in color. It's got a hint of fruit to it. It's got a caramel aromatic to it."
Countries such as Australia, Germany and Colombia have all tried selling their own versions of Duff Beer until they received cease and desist orders from Fox's parent company, 21st Century Fox. The American company has struggled to shut down production of the beer in Chile where producers have argued that Fox cannot claim trademark on a fictional product.
"Because the product did not in fact exist, the argument goes that Fox cannot claim trademark on it," Ariel Casarin, an associate professor of strategy at the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Santiago, Chile, told The Wall Street Journal.
Fox has no immediate plans to sell Duff Beer in the U.S., but one version of the drink (in three different varieties) is available at Universal theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles.
