Imagine a display that will contain so many pixels that the image will appear 3-D, even without the use of 3-D glasses. Samsung is in development to create just that – an 11k display, according to BGR that will turn your media viewing dreams into realities.
Teaming up with over 13 countries, both domestic and foreign, Samsung hopes to create this display by 2018, according to Kit Guru. Samsung will develop 11k televisions first, then plans to incorporate the display into mobile devices by 2019. To put it into perspective, the iPhone 6 Plus outputs 401 pixels per inch. With an 11k display, the output would be 2250 pixels per inch in the palm of your hand. Experts say packing so many pixels into a handheld device would make the picture appear 3-dimensional.
But will the human eye be able to make sense of such a hefty image display? In other words, will 11k be a noticeable enough difference to justify the increased cost? Samsung recently released 105-inch "curved" television costs $120,000, The Daily Mail reports.
"We are hoping that we are able to show such technologies at Pyeongchang Olympics if there is a progress in developing technologies," said Chu Hye Yong, executive director of Samsung Display's base technology department. "Although some might think that 11K as 'over specification' that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for the Korean display industry to take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this."
It's worth point out that – to date – 3-D of any kind has mostly failed to maintain consumer interest.
