Around 30,000 customers recently threatened Macy's with a boycott in a move to defend Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from alleged political persecution. The customers are reportedly planning to cut their Macy's credit cards in protest after the retail giant ended a business agreement with Trump because of his anti-Mexican comments. Macy's had been selling Trump's menswear collection for more than a decade. The complaints were said to be streaming from all communication platforms, including telephone calls, emails and messages to Macy's social media accounts, reported TMZ.
Macy's is just one of the organizations that severed business ties with Trump after he delivered controversial statements about immigration during his presidential announcement two weeks ago. He said that Mexican immigrants are "rapists" and often involved in drug trafficking in the U.S. It was roundly criticized, even by fellow Republicans. Companies such as Serta stopped selling Trump-branded products, while Univision and NBC Universal cancelled its scheduled Miss Universe pageant broadcasts, according to the Daily Mail.
In a statement announcing the split, Macy's said: "We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation," as reported previously by HNGN. The decision was also influenced by an earlier petition signed by 700,000 people urging the retailer to stop conducting business with Trump. Macy's spat with the mogul is particularly inimical to the Trump brand as the company heavily invested in cultivating Trump's image across all of its retail sites.
Many Trump fans took to social media in support of the boycott. For instance, Twitter user Philip Schuyler expressed his frustration by arguing that Macy's is selling out free speech.
And, in an interview with Liberty News, an unidentified Macy's employee admitted they are being "crushed by a tidal wave of anger."
Trump himself was elated with the recent developments and said so via Twitter:
