McDonalds is slated to put chicken wings on its menu, beginning Sept. 9.
And just like that, the fast food chain upped its customer base by an ungodly amount.
At least, that's what they're going for, according to USA Today-apparently, Mickey D's is working to dominate a kind of food whose popularity experienced a noted spike in the past couple of years.
According to GuestMetrics, wings are up there on the list of quickly-growing food categories. Sales of chicken wings in 2012 shot up 11 percent in comparison to the prior year. Restaurants hawking wings made around $8 billion in sales.
"Wings is a major move," editor of the BurgerBusiness blog Scott Hume told USA Today. "It's like the Colonel adding a cheeseburger."
Hume also stated that McDonalds is sure to become serious competition for KFC, Popeye's, Church's and Chick-Fil-A-all reigning chicken giants at this juncture.
McDonald's Mighty Wings will be bone-in, breaded-and-fried pieces of white meat prepared with a cayenne and chili pepper seasoning, and customers can chomp on them until the end of November.
Mighty Wings will come in increments of three, five and ten, with prices beginning at $2.99.
As usual, the chicken will come with an option of nine different sauces, including creamy ranch and chipotle barbeque.
McDonald's has experienced a slump in sales for the past couple of months, which might be an explanation as to why the fast food chain is extending its feelers into the Mighty Wing arena.
"The market is such that chains need menu news continuously, not occasionally," Hume concluded.
