This May, Mitch Hurwitz made television history when he cut a deal with Netflix, as well as a cavalcade of celebrities and comedians, to resurrect an old television project of his that was cancelled by Fox and sold as a DVD box set to an army of loyal fans who spent the past seven years demanding it return to the airwaves in some way. It did, in the form of a full season release on the popular streaming service. The show was called "Arrested Development" and the rest has been history.
The show returned to people's TV screens in May to a hugely popular reception. Now, Hurwitz is trying to work on the next step, and it's probably going to be a movie.
"I'm working on the movie right now," the show's creator told Rolling Stone. "I can't get into much more detail because I don't want to scare anybody off. I don't want to be presumptuous about it. I don't own the property outright - it's a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie."
Hurwitz ran into the most trouble with season 4 simply by trying to get all of the cast back together, many of whom were scattered to the winds with different projects. A movie would hopefully be less taxing on everyone involved.
"A TV season is a six-month commitment, but I think it would be very doable to get them together for four or five weeks to make a movie," Hurwitz said. "I'm hoping it happens as soon as possible, but I want to be very careful about not putting out false information. I want to get a time and tell everybody when it's happening and not play with people. Right now, I'm trying to do something else for Netflix and a movie project and things. I'm always sort of superstitious about talking about this stuff before it happens. It's the best way to guarantee it doesn't happen.
