Peter Berg, director of NBC's hit series "Friday Night Lights," slammed Caitlyn Jenner on Instagram after she accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs, Us Weekly reported. Berg posted a meme questioning the courage of the Olympic gold medalist, which referred to the transsexual woman as a "man."
"One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs," the meme reads. "Guess which man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the 'Arthur Ashe Courage Award' by ESPN?"
Jenner, who came out as transexual woman earlier this year, delivered an emotional speech as she accepted her award at the ESPYs, ESPN's award show dedicated to sports performance and athletic achievement. While she was cheered on by audience members at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, naysayers like Berg used social media to voice their opinions.
The photo was circulated by the Facebook group "Main Stream Media Sponsor Boycotts," according to Variety. It stitched a photo of Jenner (from when she was known as Bruce) side-by-side with a photo of U.S. Army veteran Gregory D. Gadson, who served 15 years in the army and lost two of his legs in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Berg reposted the image with the simple caption "yup" to 23.9 thousand Instagram followers. The sentiment behind his post went against everything Jenner hoped to accomplish with her speech, where she promoted the simple notion that everyone should accept people for who they are.
"Trans people deserve something vital," Jenner said. "They deserve your respect. And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us."
