Aaron Hernandez and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) are seeking $82,000 from his former team, the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the date for Hernandez's arraignment before the Superior Court is set for Sept. 6, when he will formally be read the charges against him found in the grand jury's indictment.
The NFLPA filed a grievance against the Patriots on behalf of Hernandez in an attempt to collect $82,000 in workout bonuses, ESPN reports. New England released Hernandez in June hours after he was arrested, voiding the remainder of the max-value $40 million, five-year extension he signed in August 2012.
The NFLPA would argue Hernandez is entitled to the $82,000 because he participated in team workouts from March until June 26, when police arrested him for the murder of Odin Lloyd.
Hernandez earned $9.79 million from the contract extension in workout bonuses and base salary, which the Patriots could try to partly recoup by arguing Hernandez violated the NFL's personal conduct policy.
As Hernandez's battle with the Patriots over money begins, his prosecution in the murder of Lloyd continues. The Bristol County Clerk of Court confirmed to CBS Sports on Tuesday that Hernandez's arraignment in Superior Court is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. ET.
A grand jury last week issued Hernandez a six-count indictment, which included first-degree murder. He will formally be read the charges at his arraignment and be asked how he pleads.
Hernandez pleaded not guilty in June when arraigned in district court, and he is expected to plead the same next week. His attorneys categorized the prosecution's case as circumstantial and weak.
After the grand jury indictment, Hernandez's case can move to trial. He is currently being held without bail in the Bristol County jail.
