Volcanic Ash Closes Down Three Indonesian Airports On Eid al-Fitr Holiday

Ash spewed from Indonesia's two volcanoes closed down three more airports in Indonesia, stranding millions of local and foreign tourists wanting to go home for the Eid holiday. Indonesia has the biggest Muslim population and the Eid al-Fitr, which signifies the end of the month of Ramadan is a big celebration in the country. However, the simultaneous eruption of Mount Raung and Mount Gamalama in Indonesia had halted air travel from the second biggest city of Surabaya, Indonesia, BBC reported.

Late Thursday, Indonesian authorities ordered the shutdown of airports near Raung serving Surabaya and Malang in East Java. Two other airports remain closed: Banyuwangi and Jember. The Ternate airport in North Maluku, near Gamalama had been closed as well.

Last week, tourists were trapped at Bali's airports because of Raung's explosion. Bali airports had since reopened early this week.

Volcanic ash could be dangerous for aircrafts as it can be absorbed by the engines causing malfunctions and shutoffs, according to MSN.
