Kala and Keira have a new home after a photo of the two dogs hugging went viral Monday.
Georgia’s Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to saving dogs and cats from high-kill shelters, posted a picture of the two pooches embracing on its Facebook page, saying the dogs were scheduled for euthanization, according to People. The organization included a heartbreaking note written from Kala’s point of view. “We’re so scared in here,” she said. “The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be ‘next.’” The canine then explained that the two told each other to be brave. “If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none.”
Angels Among Us added that there was no time left—the dogs needed to be saved immediately or else they would be killed. The organization even said that, although they are best friends, they could be separated if that means keeping them alive.
