"Gotham" has booked Michael Chiklis as the new police captain in a series-regular role for its upcoming second season, but will "The Shield" veteran be channeling the brutal Vic Mackey or his more lovable "Commish" character?
Chiklis will play Captain Nathaniel Barnes, an original character for the Fox series, who serve as a mentor of sorts for Det. Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), according to TVLine.
Barnes will land "on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force," according to "Gotham" producers (via TVLine).
"He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies - on either side of the law. For Gordon, Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon... but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy."
Gordon will need all the help he can get as the second season will see "the rise of the villains," executive producer Bruno Heller teased at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month.
Several new characters will challenge Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) for the title of head crime boss. Siblings Theo and Tabitha Galavan a.k.a. Tigress will work in tandem to take over Gotham while the most notorious criminal element of the Batman series shows up on the scene - the Joker.
"Gotham" returns for season two on Monday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
