Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis didn't appreciate Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman claiming to be the bester corner in the NFL. Revis insisted he has nothing to prove to anybody, and that Sherman must "earn it" if he wants to be called the best, USA Today Sports reports.
Revis had a Twitter squabble in February with Sherman, who has quickly established himself in just two seasons as one of the league's premier trash-talkers. The outspoken Seahawk declared himself to be the top NFL corner and dissed Revis in the process.
"You can't crown yourself as anything in this league," Revis told USA Today Sports. "You've got to earn it."
Revis was out for much of last season with a torn ACL, which didn't give him an opportunity to defend his mantle as top corner. As he continues to rehab with the Buccaneers and prepare for the season opener, Revis doesn't feel he needs to hype himself up to the media or defend himself against Sherman.
"I don't have to prove nothing to nobody," Revis said. "I put my game on film, and people can see the results."
Revis also had some advice for Sherman.
"He needs to quit attaching his career to my career," Revis said. "A lot of people need to have respect for this game. I'm not just talking about him. Respect what people have done to pave the way. Deion (Sanders) paved the way. Rod Woodson paved the way. Darrell Green. Mel Blount. Champ Bailey. Charles Woodson. Yeah, we're the next group, but you don't need to be getting into it with me.
"At the end of the day, this is a fraternity. We're all in this together, competing. But you don't have to shoot nobody else down."
The Buccaneers believe Revis will be ready to play Week 1 against his former team, the New York Jets.
