Turkish Army, ISIS Cross-Border Firefight Kills Officer, Wounds Two Soldiers

A Turkish military officer was killed and two soldiers were wounded in gunfire coming from an ISIS-controlled area in Syria in Turkey's southern Kilis province on Thursday.

"One of our non-commissioned officers was martyred and two of our specialized sergeants were wounded after five DAESH [Arabic acronym for ISIS] terrorists on the Syrian side of the border opened fire on 23 July 2015 at 13.30 against our units positioned in the area of responsibility of the first Border Patrol Unit (Oğuzeli district of Gaziantep) of the Land Forces Command," Turkey's military said in a statement, according Daily Sabah.

Turkey retaliated immediately by firing shots on ISIS posts in Syria. An ISIS militant was killed and three jihadist vehicles damaged in retaliation, the military said.

"The DAESH militant has been captured dead with his weapons (a rocket launcher and an AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle). Three vehicles of the DAESH militants have been harshly damaged by our security forces. We wish that Allah's mercy be upon our martyr and we give our condolences to his family and our nation," the statement continued.

The cross-border clashes between Turkish military and ISIS militants near Syria border city of Azaz were over on Thursday evening, according to state-owned Anadolu Agency.

Turkey has agreed to allow the U.S. carry out air strikes against ISIS from its airbase, reported BBC. U.S. officials confirmed that the two countries had an agreement in this regard after months of talks. A recent wave of violence along its border changed Turkey's policy on ISIS.

Thirty two members of a youth organisation linked with a Kurdish party were killed in an ISIS suicide bombing in border town of Suruc on Monday, HNGN reported previously.
