Detroit Tigers superstar third baseman Miguel Cabrera is injured once again, according to the team’s Twitter account.
The Tigers were playing the third game of a three-game series against the Oakland A's.
The American League MVP candidate was attempting to turn a shot in the right field gap into a double and slid into second base at the end of the play, according to the Detorit Tigers website. At first it appeared he had injured his knee. However, further examination revealed he had suffered an abdomen injury.
Cabrera assured fans he won’t miss anytime, according to ESPN.com.
"I'm OK," he said after the game. "I'll play [Friday], don't worry."
Miguel Cabrera has been dealing with minor injuries for most of August including hip issues, abdominal issues and groin issue.
He missed some games last month due to an abdominal strain that stems from his left hip problems.
Despite Cabrera’s injuries he could still win the Triple Crown two years in a row. The 30-year old is batting an astounding .359 with 43 homers and 130 runs batted in. He is leading the Majors in batting average and RBIs and trails Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis (.304 batting average, 47 HR, 120 RBIs) by only four homeruns.
In addition to the three major stat categories, Cabrera also leads the major leagues in hits (173), on-base percentage (.450), and slugging percentage (.683).
Even if Davis is able to eclipse what some deem the rightful homerun record set by New York Yankees legend Roger Maris (62), it would be very hard to argue against Cabrera for MVP with the tear that he is on. If Cabrera is able to catch Davis in homeruns and win the Triple Crown, it would be near impossible for the superstar to not to take home his second straight Most Valuable Player award.
The Tigers defeated the A's 7-6 on a three-run walk of homerun in the ninth inning by right fielder Torii Hunter.
