A shooter identified as John Russell Houser, fired at least 13 shots during a screening of "Trainwreck" Thursday night at the Grand Theater in Lafayette, La. Three people, including Houser, who ran back inside to shoot himself once he heard police arriving at the scene, have died, and seven others are injured.
Universal Pictures, which distributed the film, released a statement about the shooting, Deadline reported. "All of us at Universal Pictures send our heartfelt sympathies to the victims of this senseless tragedy and their families in Louisiana," they wrote.
Governor Bobby Jundal took to Twitter to confirm the shooting before he headed to Lafayette. "I'm on my way to Lafayette right now," he wrote. "Please say a prayer for the victims at Grand Theatre and their families."
Amy Schumer, who stars in the film, also expressed her condolences on Twitter, writing, "My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana." Bill Hader stars alongside Schumer in the comedy.
Judd Apatow, who directed the film, also released his own statement on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"One of the reasons we make these movies is because the world can be so horrifying and we all need to laugh just to deal with it," he said. "So to have this happen in a room where people were smiling and laughing devastates me. My thoughts and love go out to the victims and anyone touched by this madness or any madness. We, as a country, need to find a way to do better."
