The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Spoilers: The Doctor is In; Elena and Caroline Make A New Enemy

Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are off to college in Season 5 of “The Vampire Diaries” and of course, trouble will be following them.

Rick Cosnett will play Dr. Wes Maxfield, according to Entertainment Weekly. Maxfield will play a biology professor who will “make fast enemies” of the two girls. According to the International Movie Database Cosnett is an Australian actor who started his career in theater and then moved onto the big and small screen.

Caroline and Elena will eventually suspect Maxfield is “hiding a dark and dangerous secret.”

It is good to see the TVD team add an additional villain. We know that Silas (Paul Wesley) will be the major problem next season and that Katherine (also played by Dobrev) will present her usual annoying issues. However, it’s possible that Silas could be a problem that continues into next season and we can assume that Katherine isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Therefore Dr. Maxfield could be a season-long problem that is eventually dealt with in May.

As for the girls’ college experience, show creators Caroline Dries and Julie Plec shared some insight into what we can expect during an interview with WetPaint.com.

“Caroline is in true Caroline Forbes form, trying to make the best of her college experience, in spite of several disappointments that come her way, and a challenge that she has to face in her relationship with Tyler who she still loves very, very deeply and remains deeply committed to,” Plec told the website earlier this summer.

Dries said Elena could still have a relationship with Damon in Season 5 despite her departure for higher education. The EP explained that “luckily, Whitmore's just a car ride away, so it's long distance, but they're still going to have scenes together and stuff, so it's not like she's going away forever.”

However we know that “Delena” will run into some issues. Elena is going to become close with a boy while at Whitmore and she will learn some pretty upsetting information about Katherine and Damon.

It seems pretty safe to say that Caroline and Elena won’t be having a blissful freshman year.

Season 5 of “The Vampire Diaries” premieres Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8/7c on The CW.
