The Marvel Cinematic Universe is as defined by its sense of humor as it is by its iconic characters. We all love Iron Man, but where would he be without Tony Stark's blazing wit? "Guardians of the Galaxy" had virtually no name recognition but that didn't stop Star-Lord from cracking audiences up in one of the most entertaining MCU films to date. "The Avengers" never would have taken off without Joss Whedon's built in laughs.
The point is, Marvel wants to strike a fun and humorous tone with their movies. Perhaps their best chance at accomplishing this will be with the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot. Spidey has always been a wise cracker, but confirmed writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein ("Vacation") are intent to display his humor as they spoke about Peter Parker's personality with NPR.
"He's a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he's an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have."
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said as much back in April when he spoke to IGN at the press day for "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"When he puts that mask on in the comics, he has a non-stop wit that is almost as troublesome to the bad guys he is fighting as his webs and agility. And we feel we really haven't seen that in the movies. That's just the tip of the iceberg."
Marvel has successfully infused elements of different genres into their films before. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" echoed a 1970s conspiracy thriller. "Iron Man 3" came off as a detective story. "Ant-Man," at its core, is a heist film. Perhaps it's not that far-fetched to make "Spider-Man" a superhero action flick that emphasizes humor.
Tom Holland ("The Impossible") will make his MCU debut in next year's "Captain America: Civil War" before getting his own solo film in 2017.
