A family of professional treasure hunters hit the gold mine when they were able to retrieve $1 million worth of coins and jewelry from a Spanish shipwreck from the 18th century, according to Florida Today.
The Schmitt family discovered the treasure off the coast in Florida in the wreck of the Capitana, which is the flagship of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet. The Schmitt's are subcontractors of Queens Jewels LLC, a treasure hunting company.
The treasure haul consists of 51 gold coins, 40 feet of ornate gold chain and a Tricentennial Royal, and an extremely rare Spanish coin that is reported to be worth around half a million dollars, according to Time.
Brent Brisben, the owner of the treasure hunting company, revealed that this discovery is by far one of the biggest hauls that has ever been taken from the ship.
Per the agreement made between the company and the contractor, Brisben will give 20 percent of the haul to the state of Florida while the two will split the remaining treasure equally.
It is believed that there is still treasure left down below the coast of Florida, which is estimated to be worth around $400 million, according to the New York Daily News.
