By throwing for two touchdowns and leading the team to a comeback victory in the final preseason game Tim Tebow did everything he could to land one of the 53 roster spots on the New England Patriots, it turns out he fell just short as the controversial quarterback was released on the final cut day, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Tebow was always a long-shot to make the roster; the Patriots haven't carried three quarterbacks the majority of the time that Bill Belichick has been in charge and Ryan Mallett has proven to be a far more consistent backup to Tom Brady.
The Heisman Trophy winner and two-time National Champion at Florida may have seen his last opportunity to make an NFL team at quarterback pass him by. After taking over at quarterback in Denver and leading the Broncos to an unexpected AFC West title and playoff victory during the 2011 season Tebow has had a tumultuous NFL career.
After being traded to the Jets before the 2012 season Tebow was forced to be part of the ridiculous soap opera revolving around Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez. When Sanchez was finally benched Ryan overlooked Tebow and went with third stringer Greg McElroy. Shortly after the season Tebow was cut.
Throughout his brief career Tebow has been plagued by trouble reading defenses, a very long throwing motion and inaccuracy. It has been mentioned many times that Tebow would be able to play at a different position but so far he has insisted on remaining a quarterback, according to CBS Sports.
Judging from comments made by Patriots owner Bob Kraft earlier in the month it was difficult to part ways with the quarterback, according to CBS Sports.
"Anyone who's met him, he's a very special young man," Kraft said. "I'm rooting for him. I have the privilege of letting Bill make that decision. He's got a pretty good record doing that."
After the game on Thursday Tebow was asked by reporters if he thought he had a chance at making the roster. Tebow answered by citing his faith, as he has answered all of the hype surrounding his short NFL career, according to the Washington Post.
"I'm blessed, because of my faith, that I don't have to worry about the future because I know who holds my future," Tebow said. "It's something I try to live by. It really gives you a lot of peace in whatever circumstance I'm in."
