According to a new study at the Michigan Technological University, juice extracted from rice cells can effectively kill human cancer cells and not harm the normal lung cells, reports Medical Xpress.
The new discovery can lead to more effective treatments for cancer. Biologist Ramakrishna Wusirika and his team developed the unique form of drug by extracting the raw cell mass from the rice stem-cells called calli, which was then refined with seeds of rice plant Oryza Sative. The extracts taken out of the calli was then applied on the colon and kidney cancer cells to analyze the results. The results were astonishing when found 95 percent of kidney cancer cells and 83 percent of colon cancer cells were destroyed with a minimal of less than 5 percent of normal cells were damaged, according to Medical Xpress.
Taxol, an anti-cancer drug developed in the treatment of cancer cells had adverse reaction compared to efficient results by the calli, which destroyed less than 80 percent of cancer cells of both types and had a huge impact on the normal lung cells too. More than 20 percent of normal cells were killed with the treatment of Taxol.
Wusirika and his team is now determined to try the rice callus solution of other types of cancers including prostrate, breast and lung cancers. Wusirika said he is positive that it will be effective in all types of cancers and it is just a matter of time till it is been tested, according to the report.
Wusirika will further look in to the components that are effective in the significant treatment of such cancer types which will in turn help in developing more advanced drugs using their chemical composition in the treatment of all type cancers.
The findings of the study are published under the article "Anticancer Activity of Rice Callus Suspension Culture" in Phytotherapy Research.
