Intel and Micron jointly announced brand new memory technology today, dubbed 3D XPoint (Cross Point) memory, Forbes reports.
This product is basically a new class of memory that the two giant tech companies claim is a thousand times faster than the current NAND Flash memory. This means that the usual 2-3GB/sec of bandwidth can now provide 3000GB/sec of bandwidth with the 3D XPoint memory, according to another article by Forbes.
Experts have shared their insights on the new product. Bob O'Donnel from Technalysis said, "There are other companies who have talked about new types of memory technology, but this is about being able to manufacture the stuff - that's why they are making such a big deal out of it," BBC News reports.
3D XPoint will be manufactured in a joint facility by Intel and Micron in Lehigh, Utah. There is no word about how much the production and development costs, but CEO of Micron Mark Durcan mentions that, "it didn't come cheaply."
There is also no news as to how much the 3D XPoint will cost.
A wide range of benefits can be seen from this new product, including the speeding up of scientific researches and improving video games.
The new memory will likely require a rethinking in how traditional PCs will be designed in the coming years, especially since today's SATA and its replacements are too slow, PC World reports.
Products that will use this new technology might be available by next year, BBC adds.
