Michael Cohen, one of the top lawyers for Republican presidential candidate and billionaire Donald Trump, has issued an apology for making an "inarticulate comment" about rape.
The comments first came into light when the Daily Beast posted a story recounting a deposition found in the 1993 book "Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump," in which Trump's ex-wife Ivana described an encounter with her then-husband as rape.
Cohen was quoted by the newspaper as saying: "Of course, understand that by the very definition, you can't rape your spouse," according to USA Today.
Cohen issued an apology for making the comments on Tuesday, branding them "inarticulate" and that it was said in his "moment of shock and anger."
"As an attorney, husband and father there are many injustices that offend me but nothing more than charges of rape or racism. They hit me at my core," Cohen said in a statement to CNN.
He added: "Rarely am I surprised by the press, but the gall of this particular reporter to make such a reprehensible and false allegation against Mr. Trump truly stunned me.
Cohen also threated to sue the Daily Beast reporter and ruin his life. "So I'm warning you, tread very f------ lightly, because what I'm going to do to you is going to be f------ disgusting. You understand me," he said.
