Falling Tree: Children At California Summer Camp Injured

A 75-foot tree uprooted and fell onto kids at a summer day camp in Pasadena, Calif., Tuesday, leaving eight children injured, officials said.

The pine tree crashed without warning a little before 5 p.m., when the children and their families were walking through Brookside Park, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said, according to FOX News.

"It's just such a huge tree - no warning," said witness Klea Scott. "Massive amounts of pine needles that we couldn't see if there were more people in there."

Witnesses report seeing children run in every direction as the massive tree fell.

"We heard a crack and then I just caught a glimpse of the tree falling down," said Andrew Aguiniga, a child at the park, according to NBC's Southern California affiliate.

Two children were critically injured following the incident and were taken to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Derderian said officials are unsure why the tree fell and are bringing outside specialists to help investigate, according to the Associated Press. It's noted that although California is in the middle of a severe drought, it's not clear if that played any part in the incident.

"We are bringing out an independent arborist to investigate what could have caused this," she said.
