MTV announced that it has renewed its slasher show "Scream" for a second season, Variety reported. The horror TV series is based on Wes Craven's '90s film franchise of the same title.
"We are thrilled by how our viewers have responded to the reinvention of 'Scream,'" Mina Lefevre, executive vice president of series development and head of scripted programming at MTV, said in a statement. "We look forward to another season filled with suspense, horror and more twists and turns."
The show is loosely based on the original films, but follows a similar plot where a slasher targets a group of teenagers. Set in a high school, MTV's "Scream" follows the cast of teen archetypes: popular Emma (Willa Fitzgerald), loner Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus), nerd Noah (John Karna), athlete Will (Connor Weil), socialite Brooke (Carlson Young) and new kid Kieran (Amadeus Serafini), according to Entertainment Weekly. The teens fight to stay alive as the masked killer tries to pick them off one by one.
The Dimension Television show started strong with 1.6 million viewers during the premiere, according to Deadline Hollywood. It has also generated 8 million streams across various platforms.
"The 'Scream' franchise has been such a huge part of our history and to watch it evolve, find a new generation of fans and succeed at MTV makes this all the more sweet," Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, said in a statement. "We promise even more scares, surprises, romance and of course kills in season two."
