The St. Louis Cardinals were discussing a trade with the Cleveland Indians shortly after last night's loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The club went out and acquired an outfielder from the Cleveland Indians following Matt Holliday's injury.
The Cardinals sent prospect pitcher Rob Kaminsky to Cleveland in exchange for Brandon Moss, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Disptach. Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reported the initial talks between the two sides in the early morning hours on Thursday and confirmed the deal this morning.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal also confirmed the deal and said the Indians view Kaminsky as "having a good chance to be a major-league starting pitcher."
Bob Nightengale of USA Today noted the Cardinals were interested in Moss before Holliday's injury.
Moss landed in Cleveland this past offseason in a trade with the Oakland Athletics. He's batting .217/.288/.407 with 36 runs scored, 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in 94 games and Rosenthal said the club was worried about losing his offense in 2016, but it could not pass on Kaminsky.
The 20-year-old left-hander has spent the entire season at Class A Advanced Palm Beach and is 6-5 with a 2.09 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 17 starts (94 2/3 innings). He was the first-round pick of the Cardinals (28th overall) back in 2013 and Baseball America ranks Kaminsky as the organization's No. 5 prospect.
