A family was shot and killed after they stopped to help a man who was stranded on a road in Montana's Crow Indian Reservation, shocking the nearby community.
The sequence of events started Wednesday when a man ran out of gas near Pryor, in southern Montana. Bryce Hugs, a relative, told the Billings Gazette that his aunt, Tana Shane, drove by a man who appeared to be stranded south of town. She allegedly drove past him to pick up her husband, Jason, and daughter, Jorah, before going back to help him, according to Fox News.
Details about what happened next are unclear, but the FBI confirm that the gunman shot the family, killing Tana and Jason while injuring Jorah.
"When they came back to help him, that's when it all took place," said Hugs. "[He] killed both of them and then shot the daughter. It grazed her in the head and, when she took off, [he] shot her in the back," according to Inquisitir.
Police reported that Jorah was unable to provide more information about the incident.
"The victim that was transported to the emergency room really doesn't know what's going on," said Big Horn County Undersheriff Bart Elliott.
Law enforcement from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Montana Highway Patrol, Big Horn County Sherriff's Department and the FBI responded to a 911 call about the shooting. Authorities later called in a helicopter to help in the search for the 2006 silver Pontiac that belonged to the victims.
A man named Jesus Deniz was arrested later in Meeteetse, Wyo., for his connection to the murder, and was being held in "investigatory custody for another agency" in the Park County Detention Center. It's unknown what charges he faces or if he has been given bail.
