After a Montreal man was poorly compensated for bed bugs and subsequently wrote a poor review online, the extravagant Hotel Quebec sued their displeased guest for $95,000 worth of damages, The Daily Dot reported.
Laurent Azoulay of Montreal traveled to Quebec City in April with his son and son's hockey team, where they booked rooms in Hotel Quebec. In the middle of the night, Azoulay discovered bed bugs biting his legs and immediately went to the front desk, with bugs in hand, to complain.
However, the front desk employees were of little help to him, only offering $40 and a stay at a nearby hotel when Azoulay specifically wanted to remain with his son and son's teammates. After leaving the expensive hotel the next morning, Azoulay wrote a negative review of Hotel Quebec on Trip Adivsor.
"At first this hotel looks ok....until you wake up in the middle of the night at 3:00AM because you've been scratching all over and realize your bed is infested with BED BUGS! What a nightmare!" Azoulay wrote on the website. His review received 1,500 helpful votes from other Trip Advisor users.
According to The Daily Dot, Azoulay submitted his review right after he walked around the hotel lobby telling other guests about his experience.
Ever since his post on Trip Advisor, business at Hotel Quebec suffered due to all the negative attention, receiving tons of phone calls about bed bug concerns, and asked their unsatisfied guest to remove it. When Azoulay refused, they filed at $95,000 law suit.
The review is still posted online and the law suit is still pending. A report of bed bugs has not been listed on the international Bed Bug Registry, a website which covers locations for travelers in the U.S. and Canada that have been infested.
