Self Laid Booby Trap To Protect Pot Plants Kills Owner

A paranoid New York farmer concerned about the safety of his marijuana plants ended up being a victim of his own booby-trap and died, Saturday.

A trap for intruders caught the owner off-guard resulting in his death. The tragic incident occurred when a 50-year-old New York farmer was riding an all-terrain vehicle in the backyard of his property before running into one of his own booby-traps, a piano wire strung up around his property to protect his large marijuana plants. The owner, identified as Daniel R. Ricketts, died Saturday, at Saw Mill Road, near Thacher Park, where he owns a private property and a house.

The Sheriffs found the body in the backyard of his property Sunday, where the incident took place. According to Albany County Sheriff Craig D. Apple, Ricketts had grown four large marijuana plants in his property and had set up tight security to protect the plants from robbers. The sheriff said that the wire was barely visible and appeared to only harm those on an ATV or a motorcycle. To further protect the plants, Ricketts had barbed wires and leg traps set across his property.

The police suspect that alcohol may have contributed to the deadly incident.

Marijuana has been a hot topic for discussions in political circles. Several protests were carried out to legalize the use of the drug. Some of the states in the U.S. have already legalized the use of marijuana, but only for medicinal use. These states are Michigan, New Jersey, California, District of Columbia and recently added Colorado and Washington.

Under the federal law, marijuana will remain an illegal drug under Controlled Substance Act.
