"Fifty Shades of Grey" fans have been quick to express their disappointment in Universal Pictures and Focus Features choice for Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. On Monday E.L. James broke the news on Twitter that Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam would play the leading couple.
Immediately fans commented telling the author that the choices were wrong.
"Want this movie to flop, huh? Nothing about this guy says Christian Grey. Yeah I read the books," one user posted.
"Ok... they kill it they freaking kill it. The movie has been totally ruined. Fifty Shades will suck now," someone else tweeted.
"Please tell us it was a joke!" another Twitter user posted.
Several hours after revealing the cast, James sent out another tweet thanking everyone including the "haters," the Daily Mail reports.
"To all the supporters, lovers and haters - thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you," she tweeted.
Even the producers and executives involved in "Fifty Shades of Grey" defended the choice to pick Johnson and Hunnam.
"There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc." Dana Brunetti tweeted.
"So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
Michael de Luca simply tweeted: "auditions were stunning, incredible chemistry!"
Many fans were upset that their favorites were not picked for the role. From the very beginning of casting rumors Matt Bomer, Henry Cavill, Alexis Beledel and others were among the top contenders for fans.
According to the Daily Mail, it's believed Johnson was picked to play Steele because producers and executives were looking for a young, up-and-coming actress.
Even though many fans were upset over the choices there were some who encouraged people to trust their decision. As Brunetti pointed out in his tweet Johnson and Hunnam did need to have great chemistry in order to even be offered the part.
The two had to do a "chemistry test" - or a scene on video - to convince "Team 50" they were perfect for the role. A source told The Wrap that Johnson and Hunnam had to audition for the role.
Several favorites reportedly turned down the role including Felicity Jones because of full frontal nudity and Robert Pattinson.
